Growing up in India, Lil’ Trunks clothing designer Sush Uptala was mesmerized by the majestic painted elephants at temples and festivals. The magical mother & child bond of these large creatures inspired Sush as she set out to create a baby & children’s collection highlighting the vibrant beauty of her homeland.
“At every nook and corner you see color from flowers, fresh fruits and vegetables, spices, saris, Bollywood billboards,” said Sush, who studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology and now resides in Southern California. “I want to bring small elements of my childhood form India into everyday children’s wear fashion.”
Available in sizes from newborn up to 4T, Lil’ Trunks’ spring/summer collection is a bouquet of Indian summer flower prints- hibiscus, lotus, and dahlias- on classic silhouettes. Rompers with ruffled edges, empire-waisted dresses with Peter Pan collars, and sleeveless woven Bubbles come in an array of limes, corals, and berry patterns. Boys styles add a dash of Indian street scenes with rickshaw and tuk tuk prints. Styles retail for $18 to $65.
Lil Trunks’ Fall ’16 collection will feature rangoli, an Indian artform where intricate patterns are created using rice, colored sand, and flowers petals on living room floors and courtyards during festivals. Tunics and dresses in denim, corduroy, and kits will feature rangoli-inspired embroidered motifs.
